10 Simple Ways to Use Essential Oils

In one of our previous posts, we talked about the power of essential oils in an attempt to deepen your understanding of the oils, their various benefits, and the most popular scents. This post will take your knowledge of essential oils a bit further by explaining their various uses. The most common uses focus on inhalation, but there are plenty of other ways to use essential oils that still allow you to benefit from their medicinal and therapeutic properties. Read on for more information!

There are three general categories for essential oil usage: aromatic, topical, and internal. We break down these three categories with some more specific uses below.

Aromatically

The aromatic use of essential oils is probably the most popular; its simplicity draws people in. You can obtain the benefits of essential oil aromas in a variety of ways. We have a few listed here:

Simple Inhale

As we stated above, the aromatic use of essential oils is quite simple. All you need to do is to open the lid and take a couple of deep breaths. You could also put a few drops in your palms, bring them to your nose and mouth, and deeply inhale.

Diffuser and Humidifier

This type of essential oil usage has gotten more and more popular in recent years. If you have a diffuser or humidifier, add a couple drops to the water and turn on the machine. The machine will waft the vapor around the room, leaving you with that same feeling as the simple inhale. If you don’t have a diffuser or humidifier, you could also use the simple steam method. This method calls for a bowl of steaming-hot water and a towel. Place the bowl on a table with a few drops of essential oil, and then place the towel over your head and the bowl. Deeply inhale the steam for several minutes at a time.

Dry Evaporation

Next is dry evaporation. Simply add a few drops of oil to your chosen dry material, such as a cotton ball or some sort of fabric. The scent will permeate the material for quite some time.

Topically

The second most popular way to use essential oils is oil-to-skin contact. Make sure to properly dilute your oil before beginning.

Rub on pulse points

Take a couple drops of oil and massage them into various pulse points and other points of tension. Essential oils are used quite often in massages, as they can target and relieve deep muscle tension.

Rollerball Treatments

Another simple method that’s perfect for relieving tension on the go is rollerballs. Dilute pure oils with a carrier oil, and use the rollerball to ease those moments of tension no matter where you go.

Skincare Upgrade

Some essential oils—peppermint, tea tree, and bergamot, for example—also work wonders on your skin. Add a couple drops to a cotton ball, and apply it directly to the affected area.

Internally

You should only use this method if you’re certain the oil is okay for internal use. If so, add a couple drops of lemon, grapefruit, orange, or lavender oil to your water for an extra hint of flavor. You could also add some to your favorite recipes to get potent and unique flavors!

Other Simple Uses for Essential Oils

  • Add a couple drops to a bath
  • Add a couple drops to your shampoo, conditioner, or body wash
  • Add it to your favorite cosmetic products
  • Apply to the tops and soles of the feet
